**Last Week's Market Recap (August 10 to August 14)**
Early in the week, preliminary figures for first quarter GDP were within expectations,
and there was concern over the future trend of American consumer spending. This led
to selling of automotive, import, and resource-related stocks, and a reactionary fall
in the market. Later in the week, there was demand for influenza-related and other
material stocks. However, a decline in the major Asian markets, and the recent strong
yen turned investors away as the market continued its fall with widespread selling
across many sectors. Moving into the weekend, investors warmed to the rally in the
US markets due to a sudden rise in the oil futures market and the recovery of Shanghai
stocks, slowing the decline. The continued strength of the yen and the end of the US
Cash-for-Clunkers program turned off many investors, leading to the selling-off of
leading shares centered around automotive stocks, as the market resumed its bearish
tone.

TOPIX fell by 26.23 points (2.69%) from the previous week to close at 947.34.
Average daily trading volume rose by 121 million shares to 2.060 billion shares,
and average daily trading value fell by 89 billion JPY to 1.3810 trillion JPY.
