7 Stocks To Know For Thursday: BP, Nokia, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Kroger, First Solar, DryShips

  • BP (BP: 32.16 +0.31 +0.97%) shares are up 1.7% in early Thursday trading after it agreed to slash three quarters of dividend payments and to set up a $20 billion escrow fund to pay for damages relating to the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.
  • Nokia (NOK: 8.7795 +0.0095 +0.11%) has its price target lowered at Barclays (BCS: 18.40 +0.25 +1.38%) to $10 from $12 on lower guidance, with estimates lower through 2011. Its rating is maintained at Equal Weight. Its shares are 0.68% higher at $8.83 in morning New York trading.
  • Online retailer Amazon.com (AMZN: 126.33 -0.57 -0.45%) rose 0.44% to $126.90 after it was initiated with a Market Weight rating at Thomas Weisel, with a price target of $135.
  • Goldman Sachs (GS: 137.39 +0.33 +0.24%) shares fell 0.4% to $137.06 in early trading. Credit Suisse (CS: 41.10 +0.62 +1.53%) cut Goldman’s price target to $225 from $235, citing challenging market conditions. Its Outperform rating is reiterated.
  • Grocer Kroger (KR: 21.01 +0.93 +4.63%) stock rose more than 5.7% to $21.24 after it reported Thursday a 14% decline in fiscal first-quarter profit, which was better than analysts’ estimates. It said it continues to expect identical supermarket sales, excluding fuel, to increase 2-3% with per-share profit between $1.60 and $1.80 a share.
  • The world’s largest manufacturer of thin-film solar power modules First Solar (FSLR: 123.76 +4.99 +4.20%) rose 4.7% to $124.30 after it was upgraded to “outperform” from “neutral” at Credit Suisse.
  • DryShips (DRYS: 4.08 -0.23 -5.34%) stock fell more than 4% to $4.20 after it got downgraded at Credit Suisse to Neutral from Outperform due to uncertainty in the near term. Its price target was lowered to $5 from $8.
  • On the economic front, U.S. initial jobless claims came in higher than expected at 472,000 for the week ended June 12, up 12,000 from last week’s revised figure of 460,000. Economists were expecting claims to drop to 450,000.
