Mid-Year Roundtable Tech Stock Picks: Microsoft, HP, Novellus

  • Trying to chose: Buy or Sell (3d illustration)Fred Hickey, the tech newsletter writes, is bullish on Microsoft (MSFT), asserting that “a lot of good things are happening there,” while “the stock is hated.” He says a wave of new products, including Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and Windows 7, “will lead to big revenue and earnings gains in coming quarters. Hickey writes that his only short right now is Salesforce.com (CRM), “selling for 120 times earnings.
  • Archie MacAllaster, chairman of investment firm MacAllaster Pittfield MacKay, is bullish on Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), noting that the stock is trading about 10x this year’s earnings; he thinks the stock could hit 65 over the next 18 months, for a potential 40% return.
  • Buy or Sell (3d illustration)Scott Black, founder and president of Delphi Management, is fond of Novellus Systems (NVLS), on the theory that the semiconductor equipment company’s shares are too cheap - and that despite concerns to the contrary, a recovery in tech demand is not about to slow.
