Concerns spread outside Europe, helping send the price of copper to its biggest fall in 15 months.
Across the markets, the Dax in Frankfurt finished 10 points higher at 6,066, while the Cac in Paris was down 16 points at 3,580. The Swiss market finished flat at 6,428.
Infineon advanced on reports in the Financial Times Deutschland that the German chipmaker is in talks with Intel about a sale of its wireless chip business.
Fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz saw same-store sales slip 6% in April, but the figure topped analysts’ forecasts. Expectations were for a 7.7% drop in sales from stores open longer than a year.
Bank of Ireland dropped after it set the price of the rights issue to repair its balance sheet at €0.55 with the Irish taxpayer likely to end up with a 36% stake once it completes.
