Raytheon Gets $6M Defense Funding (BUY)

Raytheon Co. (RTN: 49.41 +0.60 +1.23%) recently announced that its wholly owned subsidiary BBN Technologies has been awarded an additional $6.14 million in funding by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to facilitate troops in translating foreign language texts while in a battlefield.

This additional fund follows BBN Technologies’ success in meeting required targets in the first two years of the Multilingual Automatic Document Classification, Analysis and Translation (MADCAT) program that is being conducted by DARPA.

MADCAT primarily aims at automatically converting foreign language text images, such as road signs, flyers, photographs, and handwritten notes, into English transcripts without the use of linguists or help from analysts. This system is designed to ensure the safety of military personnel as well as timely completion of their mission.

Under the contract, Cambridge-based BBN Technologies will further refine a prototype translation system previously developed under the program.

In June end, Raytheon BBN Technologies received another award of $17 million by DARPA in the final year of its Global Autonomous Language Exploitation (GALE) program.

Raytheon, one of the largest aerospace and defense companies in the U.S., has a diversified line of military products, including missiles, radars, sensors, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) equipment, communication and information systems, naval systems, air traffic control systems and technical services.

We believe that there is strong growth potential in Raytheon as it excels in cyber security and classified programs by using DARPA as a platform to expand its technology base. Presently, Raytheon has its business spread across more than 8,000 programs and 15,000 contracts.
