Aeropostale’s Comparables Positive (BUY)

Aeropostale Inc. (ARO: 28.70 0.00 0.00%), the mall-based specialty retailer, came out as one of the best performers in June same-store sales results. The company delivered comparable-store sales of 8.0% compared with 12.0% in the same period last year. A shift in this year’s calendar Memorial Day that had a negative impact on May results helped boost June figures by contributing growth in low single digits.
With healthier same-store sales, total sales in the month picked up 13.0% to $792.1 million over the previous-year figure of $704.2 million. Aeropostale noted that the improvement in merchandise margins continues and inventories appear to be well positioned for the back-to-school selling season in August.
Same-Store Sales Trend
Aeropostale has a consistent record of delivering positive same-store sales. However, in the past two months, same-store sales results were somewhat weak, though still favorable. A calendar shift in the Easter calendar had a negative impact on same-store sales, which declined 5.0% in the month of April. The softness in April was followed by a modest rise of 1.0% in May.
One of Aeropostale’s nearest competitors, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF: 35.830.00 0.00%) recently posted a comparable-store growth of 9.0% in June. The company undertook various promotional strategies to order to boost sales and proved to be one of the real performers in the month.
Aeropostale currently operates 900 stores and principally focuses on young women and men in the age bracket of 14 years to 17 years, as well as kids in the age group of 7 years to 12 years.
