Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM: 32.65 0.00 0.00%) recently enhanced its BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) technology platform as an application developer friendly mobile operating system in which several innovative applications can be developed for the subscribers.
The BREW mobile platform is gaining wide acceptance among global broadband service providers. This is a mobile handset platform supporting both high-end feature-rich smart-phones as well as low-end ordinary mobile phones that are intended to drive several wireless data applications. In fact, Qualcomm is strategically developing BREW as an operating system for low-cost smartphones targeting the huge mass market of various emerging economies.
BREW technology enables mobile service providers to generate revenues from different value-added services. BREW solutions will help customers to access 3D mobile games, social networking, ring-tones, and other productivity tools. As of now, globally, BREW has been commercially deployed by more than 60 carriers in over 25 countries.
Recently, Qualcomm announced that Verizon Wireless (VZ: 26.61 0.00 0.00%)will be the first company to launch an Open Catalog Platform for BREW application developers. Verizon Wireless is so far the largest telecom operator that has already deployed BREW mobile platform. AT& T (T: 24.41 0.00 0.00%) and Sprint Nextel Corp. (S: 4.14 0.00 0.00%) have also decided to offer mid-tier mobile handsets to their respective customers based on the BREW platform.
