Oil Stocks to Invest In - BP Or Not BP

Lately, there has been much talk about the debacle that the company British Petroleum (more commonly known as simply BP) is in. An offshore oil rig of the said company suffered a total breakdown which has resulted into an apparently uncontrollable oil spill. Obviously, a multitude is wondering about which are the best oil stocks to invest in.

For the past month, BP oil stocks have been continuously plummeting on grounds of fears by stock traders that the company may be in no position to get out of this socioeconomic quagmire. Furthermore, the ensuing scenario has caused immense destruction throughout the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas since then.

However, there are a few things that a lot of people are missing out. Seemingly, a majority of them are more preoccupied at seeing the glass half-empty than seeing it half-full.

Before anyone starts to go into fits of speculation, note that of all the blue chip stocks, oil companies typically predominate. Whichever way, oil is something that nobody can live without. Oil is something that anyone is willing to pay for regardless of cost.

Assuming that BP will spend a billion or two throughout the cleanup, it is only a matter of time before the company recovers the amount and goes back with a big rebound. In essence, this is just an expected part of the business cycle.

People have doubts about the BP's capacity to actually get through this mess, especially with the successive failures of their cleanup plans. However, in business, before corporate social responsibility, profitability takes precedence. It is quite easy to deduce that the BP's game plan sequence was formulated based on total implementation costs of each attempt.

With respect to this analysis and to the question about how to invest in oil stocks, there are at least three ways to proceed:

1. Short-selling BP Stocks

BP may still take a while to fix this mess up. Ergo, it is reasonable to conclude that its stock prices will continuously plummet until then. Hence, short-selling is a common-sensical way of taking advantage of the situation.

However, the down side of this tactic is that the situation is already obvious. Hence, any self-respecting stock broker would have already instructed his clients to do such. Short-selling is more of a just-in-case plan. Though the chances of making immense profits on this one is quite unlikely, profit is profit whatever the amount.

2. Bet for the Opposing Team

If one goes down, the other comes up. That is the rule for any industry whose demand doesn't go down. Since the pies never gets smaller, if there are less people sharing the pie, then everyone left will get a bigger chunk.

This translates to potential improvements in BP competitors' stock prices, such as those of Chevron and Exxon. However, there are numerous miscellaneous factors affecting stock prices in general. These factors may overshadow this schadenfreude being felt by the oil industry minus BP.

3. Bet for the Underdog

Yes. Based on history, a rebound from BP's end is quite likely. Hence, it is a reasonable thing to say that BP's stocks will go up at a certain point in the future. When one hits rock bottom, he has nowhere else to go but up, right?

Furthermore, this is neither the first nor the worst oil spill in history, Exxon Valdez suffered worse back then but, in relation to stocks in general, it was little affected in terms of prices.

Essentially, any possible outcome may happen. Moreover, it is wise to consult a professional who can put into consideration all the possible factors before deciding which the best oil stocks to invest in are.

American Oriental Bio (AOB)-FULL ANALYST REPORT

http://www.streetinsider.com/images/news/4287104/resize_aob-l.jpgAmerican Oriental Bioengineering's (AOB) first quarter earnings per share came in at $0.04, well below both the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.07 and $0.10 reported in the year-ago period.

Although revenues recorded a 16.7% year-over-year increase to $53.7 million, we remain concerned about the declining operating margin. Prescription drug sales should continue their growth trajectory as China aims to reform its health care sector to incorporate unaddressed rural markets.

However, in the highly fragmented Chinese pharmaceutical industry, AOB's expenses are likely to increase given the need to stay ahead of its competitors and to meet stringent manufacturing norms. We maintain our Underperform recommendation on the stock.

Ford Motor Company (F) - Analyst Report

f_logo.jpgFord Motor Company (F ) looks forward to widening its market share through its accelerated product transformation plan: "One Ford." Incorporating key objectives such as shifting focus from trucks to small cars, delivering more vehicles from fewer core platforms and implementing cost reduction efforts, the plan could have a positive impact on the stock.

In 2009, the plan had already turned in a profit after 4 years. Furthermore, it helped the automaker gain market share in the U.S.

In addition, favorable net pricing, structural cost reductions and improved Ford Credit results are driving Ford s earnings. These have led us to upgrade the recommendation on shares from Neutral to Outperform with a target price of $13.

Value - Frontline Limited

http://www.haymarket.com/images/news/News_10Nov09_2.gifFrontline Limited (FRO) recently tripled its dividend in a surprise move after a difficult 2009 for the shipping sector.

Frontline operates one of the largest fleets of oil tankers in the world. Earnings have plunged in the last 18 months as crude prices declined from record highs and the global recession sent demand into a tailspin.

At the record high on oil prices in July 2008, Frontline's earnings per share was around $9 and then it plunged to $1.32 per share in 2009.

You can see the decline in the earnings in the chart below. Analysts expect some rebound into 2011 but then it looks uncertain from there.

Frontline Surprised by 40.6% in the First Quarter

On May 21, Frontline reported a better than expected first quarter with earnings per share of 90 cents compared to the Zacks Consensus of 64 cents. The earnings boost was the result of a stronger spot market compared to the fourth quarter of 2009.

The average daily time charter equivalents (TCEs) earned in the spot and period market in the first quarter by Frontline's VLCCs, Suezmax tankers and Suezmax OBO carriers were $45,300, $31,800 and $47,900 which is much higher than the $33,200, $21,300 and $42,800 average in the fourth quarter.

In March, the company completed a $225 million convertible bond offering with proceeds from the bonds being used for general corporate purposes, financing of remaining equity investments in the company's newbuilding program and for any future market opportunities.

Dividend Raised

On May 20, Frontline's board declared a 75 cent dividend for those shareholders of record as of June 2. This is a big raise from the prior quarter's dividend of 25 cents. Frontline paid out 90 cents in dividends for the entire 2009 year.

The big dividend increase pushed the dividend yield up to 10%. It is payable on June 21.

Outlook for the Second Quarter

Frontline has seen the global recovery advancing at different paces depending on the part of the world. The emerging markets are off to a stronger recovery with Asia in the lead. The advanced economies are tepidly growing with the US off to a better start than Europe or Japan.

Given that the company had already seen about 3 weeks worth of trading in the second quarter, it said that it appeared the good results would continue into the second quarter. But, of course, 3 weeks does not make the whole quarter and anything can happen in the global economy, from a greater slowdown in Europe and China to an overheating in Brazil.

Zacks Consensus Estimates Rise

The analysts pretty much like what they heard from the company last week. 6 estimates rose for the second quarter boosting the estimate to 57 cents from 43 cents just a week earlier.

The 2010 Zacks Consensus jumped 18.7% to $2.92 from $2.46 in the last week as 7 estimates moved higher and 1 fell. Just 90 days, the estimate stood at only $1.92 per share.

Earnings are expected to continue to grow in 2011, but at a slower pace of just 13.2% compared to 2010. The 2011 Zacks Consensus has risen by 39 cents to $3.30 per share in the last week.

Value Fundamentals

Frontline has a forward P/E ratio of only 10.3 which is under the industry average of 17. It also has a value price-to-book ratio of 2.9.

The company's 5 year average return on equity if a stellar 73% but even it's one year ROE is a solid 13%, especially when compared to its industry that averaged just 6.8%.

Frontline is strong buy stock.

OfficeMax, Inc.

http://blog1.ebates.com/ebates/Office_Max_Logo.jpgOfficeMax, Inc.( OMX ) continues to trade near its multi-year high after reporting better than expected Q1 results in late April that included a 95% earnings surprise. The solid surprise sent estimates higher, with the next-year estimate now projecting 48% earnings growth.

Company Description

OfficeMax, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, specializes in selling office products worldwide. The company was founded in 1913 and has a market cap of $1.45 billion.

OfficeMax's earnings and share price took a hit in the volatile market of 2008 and 2009 as its big, corporate customers scaled back on spending. But now with sales showing signs of stability and the company focusing on more effectively managing its cost structure, it has returned to profitability and pushed its share price back to a multi-year high. We saw that strong upward momentum on April 29 with OfficeMax's Q1 results that included a massive 95% earnings surprise.

First-Quarter Results

Revenue for the period was mostly even with last year at $1.92 billion. But earnings came in much better than expected at 39 cents, 95% ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. In spite of one miss two quarters ago, the company still has an average earnings surprise of 35% over the last four quarters.

OfficeMax's quarter was driven by cost and expense management, with operating income jumping to $49.4 million from $27.5 million last year as its operating margin expanded to 3.3% from 2% last year.

Growing Cash Position

The company also emerged from the quarter with a stronger balance sheet, with its cash position increasing $391 million to $564 million against a debt-load of about $296 million when excluding $1.47 billion in non-recourse debt.

Estimates

The analysts were encouraged by the solid Q1 performance, sending estimates significantly higher. The current year is up 33 cents in the last month to 78 cents, while the next-year estimate has added 26 cents to $1.16, a bullish 48% growth projection.

Valuation

With some big gains over the last 12 months, OMX's forward P/E multiple of 21X is a premium to its peers 18X. Its P/B multiple of 2.77X is exactly in line with its peers.

The Chart

OMX recently hit a new multi-year after posting some big gains over the last year on a rebounding economy and operational gains. In spite of the short-term pullback, the long-term trend should provide support on any more weakness. Take a look below.

Scripps Network (SNI) - Growth & Income

Scripps Network Interactive
Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI) operates popular TV networks including HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel. These media properties are generating high ratings, and that translates to healthy advertising rates and strong revenue growth.

Growth and Income

The company is expected grow it EPS 24.4% in 2010, 16.4% in 2011, and 14.8% per year for the next 3 to 5 years. The stock also offers investors a dividend yield of 0.7%.

This Zacks #2 Rank stock trades at 21.2x 2010 consensus EPS estimates and 18.1x 2011 consensus EPS estimates.

Strong First-Quarter Results

On April 27, the company announced consolidated revenue of $469 million, an increase of 32%. Excluding Travel Channel, which was acquired Dec 15, 2009, consolidated revenue increased 16%. Scripps earned $0.50 per share, topping the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 7 cents, or 16.3%.

Company Outlook

The company essentially maintained its previous guidance. It expects affiliate fee revenue of $530-540 million, programming expenses of $380-400 million, and non-programming expenses (which were reduced slightly) of $545-560 million.

Estimates

The company's strong first-quarter results and management guidance prompted analysts to boost their estimates for 2010 and 2011. In the last 30 days, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2010 is up 8 cents, or 3.9%, to $2.15, and the 2011 Zacks Consensus Estimate is up 14 cents, or 5.9%, to $2.51.

The company has beaten the Zacks Consensus by an average of 7.6% in each of the last five quarters.

The Chart

After bottoming around $27 in July 2009, SNI shares are up 67%. The stock experienced a sharp sell-off in February, dropping over 16%. However, the stock recovered nicely, making a new high on May 12.

SNI went through another sharp pullback in May, losing about 9%, but the stock has already pared some of those losses. It now trades just about 5% below its 52-week high.

Aggressive Growth - Vishay Intertechnology !!!

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (VSH ) is trading at bargain-basement prices despite another earnings surprise and bullish estimate revisions.

Company Description

Vishay Intertechnology makes discrete semiconductors and other electronic components. The company's products are used in many industries including telecom, aerospace, medical, and industrial.

Topped Forecasts

On May 5 Vishay reported first quarter results that included a $34 million sequential increase in revenues, to $641 million. On a year-over-year basis it was a 42% pop.

Net income came in at over $45 million, which is up from a $29 million loss one year ago. Earnings per share broke down to 24 cents, 2 cents higher than expected and up from an 8 cent loss last year.

Lean and Mean

Vishay's President said the company has rounded out a tough 3-year period. The struggles have left the Vishay "re-focused on profitability", which should lead to record highs.

Guidance often trumps the bottom-line results, which makes sense given that the market is forward looking. You don't buy the past earnings; you are buying the future earnings potential. This is especially true in uncertain times, so the bullish comments are a great sign for Vishay.

Estimates Jump

After the news, all 5 covering analysts raised their projections. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for full-year 2010 is up 19 cents to $1.08.

Projections for 2011 are averaging $1.17, up 17 cents for the Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy). These growth rates are exponential given the 2 cents earned in 2009.

Shares are on Sale

Even after the third consecutive earnings surprise, bullish comments and massive growth projections, shares are still trading at just 8 times 2010 earnings.

Vishay's expected growth is a bargain, with a PEG Ration of 0.7. VSH has a price to book of only 1.1, while its peers average about 1.3 times.

The Chart

Shares of VSH took a hit after the earnings news and even harder on the "flash crash" the following day. The stock is showing signs of stabilizing and if we get a MACD crossover, it will show momentum is back on our side.

Fitch Upgrades DOW, So Do We

Shares of chemical giant Dow Chemical Company (DOW ) rose 4.3% or $1.14 per share to $27.65 on Thursday soon after Fitch Ratings Service upgraded its outlook on the company to "stable" from "negative." Fitch has also affirmed its BBB long-term issuer default and senior unsecured revolving credit facility ratings on Dow.

The rating agency foresees recovering demand for Dow’s products in the emerging markets, especially in Asia and Latin America. However, Fitch is skeptic about any significant improvement in demand for the company’s products in the mature markets, where growth remains slow. As such, Fitch expects modest improvement in Dow's revenues and profits in 2010.

With respect to Dow’s debt structure, Fitch showed concerns over the highly leveraged balance sheet. Although Dow has fully offloaded its $9.2 billion bridge loan related to the Rohm & Haas (“ROH”) acquisition in 2009, its debt-to-capitalization ratio hovers around 50%. The rating agency also noted Dow’s weak operating cash flow as a constraint to growth.

However, Fitch is positive on Dow’s integrated production structure, which helps the company’s cost synergies. In its recent release, Dow has announced to achieve the ROH acquisition as well as other restructuring activities to result in cost synergies of $2.5 billion in 2010. The company recorded cost savings of $1.7 billion last year.

Dow has projected a 10% growth in revenues annually in its Advanced Materials division. The company expects profitability to improve with improving end-market conditions and a lower fixed cost base. Dow also plans to invest in a new Dow Coating Materials emulsion plant in eastern China, and expand Dow Water & Process Solutions facility in Fombio, Italy, to manufacture copolymers.

Joint ventures and acquisitions are an integral part of Dow’s growth strategy. These provide access to potential markets, new technologies and feedstock, while at the same time lowering capital investment and risk. Dow is targeting an acquisition growth synergy run-rate of $2 billion by the end of 2012.

Mercedes-Benz Sees Higher Earnings

Daimler AG (DAI ), the owner of Mercedes-Benz brand, has revealed that earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) from the division will exceed the same in the first quarter of 2010. In the first quarter, the division had an EBIT of €806 million ($1.12 billion) in contrast to minus €1.1 billion ($1.5 billion) a year ago. For the full-year 2010, the company expects to generate an EBIT that will be at the upper end of its previous forecast of €2.5 billion to €3 billion ($3.5 billion to $4.2 billion).

Last month, sales of Mercedes-Benz Cars rose 12%. Deliveries of E-Class sedans surged 52%, S-Class sedans hiked 7% and C-Class went up 8%.

Daimler expects a higher return on sales in the division compared with 7% in the first quarter of 2010. Previously, the company had anticipated strong demand in the division with the launch of the new generation of the smart fortwo (electric) model in the third quarter of 2010. The company is also confident about maintaining its targeted return on sales of 10% in the second half of 2012 until full-year 2013.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, has considered China as the most increasingly important market for the company. The country ranked third in terms of global sales after Germany and the U.S. The division expects a sales growth of 50% in the country to more than 100,000 vehicles this year.

In the first quarter of the year, Daimler AG showed a profit of €612 million ($850 million) or 65 eurocents (90 cents) per share in sharp contrast to a loss of €1.3 billion ($1.8 billion) or €1.40 ($1.95) per share in the prior-year quarter. The hefty gain in profit was fueled by an impressive rise in unit volumes in all the divisions, especially Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Revenues in the Mercedes-Benz Cars division were strongly influenced by sales growth in its E-Class and S-Class models. Unit sales went up by a robust 20% to 277,100 vehicles, helped by strong sales in China and the U.S. This has led revenues to grow 28% to €11.6 billion ($16.1 billion), supported by an improved product mix and pricing.

Forecast Report - OVTI, GES, BCSI

Forecast Report Update: OVTI Long and Short Targets Hit

In last evening's Forecast Report, Omnivision Technologies (OVTI) indicated a potential pre-market open Friday near 19.60 to 19.90. On the long side, buyers were most active at 19 to 19.50, levels seen as a potential floor for a play early Friday. More risk tolerant longs were advised to sit closer to the 19.60 to 19.80 range. On the short side, sellers were quick to dump out on several passes above 19.80 in night trading, a potential play for early Friday. Early Friday, the stock ranged between 19.80 and 20.41. A move in at the 19.80 target, as measured to the 20.32 regular session high, was 2.6% in the black. On the short side, a sell at 19.80 also paid off modestly, as the shares moved as low as 18.81 in regular trading. That move was 5.2% in the black.

Forecast Report: GES Targets Prove Elusive

In last evening's Forecast Report, Guess (GES) signaled a potential pre-bell open surrounding 35.50 to 35 and an early long entry point in the 34 to 34.80 range. Short plays looked less likely on this particular issue, but the 35.84 to 35.50 range was one possible area of interest. In pre-market trading, the stock ranged between 35.50 and 37.37. The stock failed to drop down to our long target range. A move to sell at the 35.84 short target was not followed up with the expected decline. The day session range was 37.25 to 39.23.

Variance Swap - Risk Management Tool For Big Investors

A variance swap is a derivative financial product designed to be a risk management tool for large professional investors. It allows them to manage portfolio risk by either hedging (removing risk) or, where appropriate, by speculating (increasing risk). Variance swaps trade mainly in the over-the-counter (OTC) market.

The basic features of a variance swap may be explained by examining the payoff earned by each party to the transaction. In simplified terms, a party's pay-off from a variance swap is given by the following formula:

($Notional amount) * (A2 - B2) x 100

where

A = forward realized volatility (expressed as a decimal)

B = swap strike level (expressed as a decimal)

In plain terms, the above formula indicates that payoff is determined by taking the notional amount and multiplying it by the difference between the forward volatility squared minus the strike level squared. This product is then multiplied by one hundred merely as an adjustment to correct for the fact that A and B are expressed in the formula as decimals rather than percentages.

The above formula is a basic representation of a variance swap payoff. Actual variance swap contracts are likely to have more complicated expressions, but the essence is captured in the above expression.

On the day the swap is traded, the two parties agree a strike price as well as the notional value for the contract. The strike price is the base or reference level against which future realized volatility will be compared. The notional value can be any amount agreed by the parties.

Assume two parties agree to enter into a three month variance swap on the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index with a strike price of 20 percent and a notional amount of $100,000. The buyer of the swap pays the seller $100,000 and will receive the volatility realized during the contract period. At the swap expiration date, the realized variance is measured to have been 10 percent. The payoff to the swap buyer is $100,000 x (0.202 - 0.102) x 100, or $300,000. The swap seller pays the buyer $300,000. The buyer made a net gain and the seller a net loss, of $200,000.

Most financial securities decrease in value if their price volatility increases. The larger the portfolio the larger the value loss caused by price volatility. Variance swap contracts are a complex product designed for professional portfolio managers not small investors. They allow flexible terms and come at relatively low cost.

Variance swaps are a recent financial innovation introduced during the 1990s. The first known variance swap traded in 1993 with the FTSE Index as the underlying asset. Significant volumes have traded in the OTC market since about 1997. A three-month variance futures contract has traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange since 2004.
